Traveller Interview: Carpe Diem Eire

JOHN, IRELAND

John is a travel blogger from Dublin who has lived in Ireland all my life, except for a brief stint in Chicago. John calls himself a part time traveller, as he couldn’t possibly afford to travel full time with his love for comfortable things, but he does have a connection to the world of travel in his work, as a hotel operations and bar manager.

Carpediemeire is his travel blog based on the travels of his Hungarian wife Beata and himself. His idea of blogging grew from a love of photography. He rarely leaves home without a camera, and even if he does his phone is always in his hand for his photography rescue. “Capturing the beauty of the world around me is without a doubt my favourite thing to do. Even more than travelling. But in my mind the two go hand in hand.”

John adds to when he started traveling- “Interestingly for a travel blogger, my love of travelling didn’t come from a childhood of travels. It came from a childhood of not travelling. I guess I’m trying to make up for lost time now. My first trip out of Ireland was when I was 19, and even then my early trips were what I would call “lads” holidays. Drinking, clubbing and lying by the pool. However as I grew older I realised that why I enjoyed travelling was down to none of these things.”

John definitely is devoted to this profound passion of sharing travel stories and meeting with fellow travellers from around the world. He is the founder and host of the very popular Travel Tribe on Twitter.

WHY TRAVELING IS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

“I guess I travel first and foremost to expand my horizons, learn about new cultures and ultimately to have new experiences. I believe the last point is key for me, life needs variety, and wherever I can find something that challenges my sense of adventure, then I am at my happiest. That’s why travel home or abroad always invigorates my soul. It doesn’t necessarily to be far flung places of the world. Learning about history is of course a primary motivator for my travels too, and the places I visit. Is there anywhere cooler on Earth than being in a castle? “

BEST TRAVEL LESSON SO FAR

“The best lesson to be learned from travelling is a profound appreciation of other peoples and cultures. Intolerance in this world is growing at an alarming rate and most of it is seeded in ignorance. Travel breaks down the walls of race and religion. I was mesmerised by my trip to Morocco, a vastly different world to that in Ireland. While I’ve always been open minded, the trip really expanded it. The rich culture and the nuances of the Islamic traditions left me spellbound. Only throughout travel can we really learn more about this world, and stop the labelling that is tearing apart the fabric of society. The world really needs to travel more, and expand its horizons. “

MISSION OF TRAVEL CONTENT

“I believe this is something that has changed with the years of writing the travel blog. I started the blog as a means to showcase my photos from my trips. Social media didn’t bring the level of fulfilment that I was seeking and I imagined a blog would. Long story short, it brought so much more than expected.

My blog has always had a niche of Irish and European travel, but has never been more specific than that. History and culture are a constant vein in my themes. Throughout, my aim has always been to convey my personality in my writing. It has brought as many challenges as anything, but also gravest personal reward. Like everything in life it’s had to adapt to my way of travel, and also to 2020. The city breaks of early Carpediemeire have inevitably been replaced by socially distanced hiking posts. But bearing in mind that my blog is as much about Carpe Diem in its content as in its name, then it’s right on track.

It’s all about living the moment wherever and whenever that might be, and sharing it with my readers. If i can present it in a way that brings a wry smile to the face of the reader as much as increase their wanderlust then I think I’ve nailed my mission.

Traveler Behind: Ludivine Anton

LUDIVINE, NEW ZEALAND

Full time midwife and part time traveler, Ludivine from France but currently settled in Auckland, New Zealand, started travelling at the age of 8. It is traveling that brought her to New Zealand. During a dancing trip in Canada in 2004, she met Maori people who amazed her with their culture- she instantly fell in love with their dances and songs. Since then, she had always wanted to settle down in New Zealand and visited for the first time in 2016 and she later came back on a working holiday visa in 2017, following her dream. It didn’t work out first landing with the work permit as her profession needed her to get registered to be able to practice. After a month, she went back home studying English for the registration and came back a year later and settled for good (or at least for a few years) in Auckland in 2019.

WHY TRAVELING IS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

“Traveling has been in my life since the age of 8, when I was part of a dancing company. We went to Canada to participate to a dancing festival. First journey in a foreign country. I met people from all over the world, discovered many different cultures… I was amazed by this diversity. I wanted to keep traveling to discover more and more. Then photography came into my life. I started to open my mind to Nature as well, and I wanted to see more and more of this beautiful planet, it’s landscapes, it’s widlife and it’s people. And keep memories of what I had seen and the emotions I had felt, and share this to you.”

MISSION OF TRAVEL CONTENT

“My theme is photography. I would like to keep doing photography because it brought me so much in my life. And maybe grow more and more, and build a small business in the future. My website is being processed, where I will showcase my photos, and sell my photos. For now traveling is quite complicated. I know borders are reopening, I do not know for how long, but I am in a situation where I cannot travel out of New Zealand (except to visit my family soon I hope), or I would not be able to come back. Somehow, it makes me see more of New Zealand, which is amazing.”

BEST TRAVEL LESSON SO FAR

“My best experience was in Burkina Faso. I went there as a student midwife to work in a local free clinic. It was the most difficult experience but also the most beautiful I have ever had. I come from a developed country and had the chance to grow up in a wonderful environment. Even though I had traveled in developing countries before, I lived 24/7 with the locals, witnessed the poverty, the difficulties they have on a daily basis, but also their strentgh facing those difficulties, because that have no choice but to live and survive. I also got the Malaria there. I was not as sick as the locals would be, because I got a preventive treatment and the symptoms were less intense. But I realised Somehow, they were happy for me to experience that, so I could realise that they are living with this threat all year long during their whole life, with the risk to die from it at any time because of the lack of money, treatment…or chance to have grown up in a developed country I will always remember all of these people I lived and worked with. Especially one of them. Every morning, she brought me breakfast at work. She had a whole family to support, she had nothing to give, yet she gave me everything. This person will always be in my heart and in my mind. This experience has been amazing professionally speaking but even more on the personal aspect.”

She believes in “Try everything once!”. In her own words,  “If you don’t like it, don’t do it a second time” but do try the first time to make that decision. A soulful solo traveler, Lamara got into travelling since she went on a school trip to Italy at the age of 16 which she recalls as  her first flight experience. Her passion has also met with her profession, she now has a degree in tourism.  She is technically a travel specialist, but haven’t yet used her degree in the tourism industry apart from a couple of jobs in the USA and Australia. She doesn’t travel full time, but blogs for a hobby now always trying to travel when  she can. She works seasonal jobs so she can travel somewhere new during off peak times, which according to her is a bonus as things tend to be cheaper then. She is a promoter of solo travelling and let us see why.

“I travel because I enjoy new experiences and it helps to develop my confidence. I sometimes feel trapped at home so am constantly itching to explore new places and get myself out there. Going solo is one of the best things you can do to grow yourself and become a much more confident person. Go back 5 years and I was a quiet person who would refuse to go anywhere alone without a friend for support. Now I can happily go to the opposite side of the world without any bother.”

“At the moment I just blog as a hobby to share my travel experiences with everyone. 

I mainly focus on budget solo travel, but cover anything from my personal travel stories to bucket lists. It would be great in the long term for it to take off and potentially make some money or be sponsored to go on epic trips that I could write about.

“If there’s one thing that I’ve learnt from travelling solo it’s that nobody cares. It’s easy to feel paranoid when wondering the streets of a city alone and feel that everyone is judging you, when it’s simply not the case. If you haven’t yet made travel buddies in a destination, it’s fine to just go it alone for a bit. One of my favourite things to do is eat by myself in a restaurant as it’s so easy to just go to a McDonald’s instead. Table service when you’re alone is so much better, but it’s probably because staff think you’re a critic/mystery shopper…”

Traveller Interviews: How Travel Influences Life?

Every traveller has a story and even if it feels like all top travel content creators are passionate about world travel, what fuels this passion can still be widely different. After all, we all see, think and act differently.

I am a life-imposed traveller who initially travelled a lot for education purposes which prompted me to explore more. and now I am hooked. With this travel blogging endeavour of mine, I am so fortunate to have come across many inspiring travel writers, bloggers and influencers producing some amazing content from really different perspectives.  On a side note, I also observe that some content is corrupted, especially with the madness of edited or fake pictures forced by social media trends these days. After having travelled a lot myself,  I learned not to trust everything I saw online, actually go see places and now I can quickly spot enriching content.

Travel in my mind not really is those amazing pictures, but the true real world you go see and experience. As rightly captured by those gave me their top five travel words as depicted in my feature image word art, travel is a composition of the people you meet, the food you eat, and the culture that carries the essence of a place among others. It is also  a personal experience of growth, exploration and freedom in being part of the world. You need to travel full time, you just need to go once in a while and pay attention to the lifestyle.

We all learn something new from everyone we meet, and the best people to learn from about the world are the travelers around us. As I stand inspired by many travel bloggers and influencers, I asked some of the authentic travellers I came across recently  a simple and but meaningful question “How Travel Influences Your Life”, and would love to share with you all, their view of the world and how they can inspire us to travel the world.
